Here is a list of school rules I found displayed in a headteacher’s office in a school in Banjul. I was struck that some of the issues addressed here are similar to those in UK schools. And, of course, other areas are different. I have not modified the wording in any of these rules; this is exactly how they were written.
Rules for pupils
- Be in school every day and on time.
- Boys should tuck in their shirts. Girls should have their uniforms below their knees.
- Boys should always comb their hair or cut it short.
- Girls should always keep their hair neatly plaited.
- No waterproof slippers allowed.
- Ibadu (veil) is not part of the school uniform – it is not allowed.
- Always put on the school uniform when in school.
- Always wash your hands with soap after using the toilet.
- Never fall in love with your teachers or classmates.
- Avoid teenage pregnancy – it can disturb your life.
- Always speak English when communicating with your teacher or friends.
- Early marriage can hamper your progress in the future.
Rules for teachers
- Be regular and punctual.
- Be clean and properly dressed.
- Waterproof slippers are not allowed in school.
- Speak English with students and colleagues.
- Treat all pupils equally.
- Never fall in love with your students.
- Always sign the time book the very time you arrive at school.
