School Rules

Here is a list of school rules I found displayed in a headteacher’s office in a school in Banjul. I was struck that some of the issues addressed here are similar to those in UK schools. And, of course, other areas are different. I have not modified the wording in any of these rules; this is exactly how they were written.

Rules for pupils

  1. Be in school every day and on time.
  2. Boys should tuck in their shirts. Girls should have their uniforms below their knees.
  3. Boys should always comb their hair or cut it short.
  4. Girls should always keep their hair neatly plaited.
  5. No waterproof slippers allowed.
  6. Ibadu (veil) is not part of the school uniform – it is not allowed.
  7. Always put on the school uniform when in school.
  8. Always wash your hands with soap after using the toilet.
  9. Never fall in love with your teachers or classmates.
  10. Avoid teenage pregnancy – it can disturb your life.
  11. Always speak English when communicating with your teacher or friends.
  12. Early marriage can hamper your progress in the future.

Rules for teachers

  2. Be clean and properly dressed.
  3. Waterproof slippers are not allowed in school.
  4. Speak English with students and colleagues.
  5. Treat all pupils equally.
