You do have fun! What a journey in the storm. I have just finished your Senegal journal and made a comment. Your card from there to us arrived today - many thanks, mate!

Another fabulous holiday journal! Many thanks and much enjoyed. Pity about the football - I rather agree with Louise that it was better to follow the more handsome teams this time!! the rest is history - and as for that young very talented (and far too good looking for his health) Mr Ronaldo it is all going to his head and the Red Scum may be sad but glad in the end if he leaves - much to Harry,my young grandson's dismay.
As I read I could almost feel the sand in my face and mouth as well as being bounced and banged around on the donkey cart. Very special too to have time to watch the nest building and ponder our priorities.
An unforgetable time for you.

Thanks again for more insight into your life and work as well as the incredibly difficult job that so many heads and teachers have in The Gambia. Your comments about less top-down and more bottom-up (or rather grassroots - up) si so tru about most of life and yet how fewleaders really do justice to that - usually lipservcie more than realistic action.
Hopefully you will see some of your plans come to fruition in the September term.

Justin this is an excellent article which we have enjoyed reading. We participated with you in the hope and frustration. In many ways it is depressingly like Ghana 40 years ago (and probably today!) We are sure that your aims of building on what energy and innovation are present, and working collaboratively to get folk to own the work and intentions is right. Thank you for publishing this and giving us and others an insight into what you are doing and trying to do.

Again, Jus, i wrote a really long comment and must have forgotten to push the submit button! Really sad about that as I cannot repeat it at the moment as duties are calling. Suffice it to say that I read it all through carefully and felt truly humbled. I then wriote a long piece about the current UK credit cruinch and the need for all to rethink their priorities. However as usual the poor are geeting poorer and the rich are not much affected. The contrasts you painted are very stark and real - we ned to change and learn to share before it is too late.

I really enjoyed reading it all - and liked the coloured trousers!

A great article Justin, bringing to mind similar livelihoods I've seen in north Africa, the Middle East, Malawi & the Seychelles (not the luxury tourist bit). It set me thinking too about how far we've moved from the ideal family support unit, with crowds of old people here bundled into care homes!! Have you seen any evidence of 'Fairtrade' commodities actually working in the Gambia or is much of it really an advertising gimmick here?
