Day Two. Gunjur to Sanyang. 10km
Saturday 1st March. This is a short stretch. We packed up our few possessions, covered the ashes of our fire with sand, and set out as the sun climbed above the horizon, and stopped after an hour for a light breakfast. This beach is almost straight for several kilometres and was possibly the least interesting portion of the journey, with not much to report. It was enjoyable to be awake early and on the move. We saw two fishing boats already out at sea, and passed two men and a bicycle collecting something from the sand.
The trees, from beneath which we had collected our firewood, soon thinned out to nothing and were replaced with a low scrub and grasses clinging perilously to the dunes. From the top of the dunes we could see smoke rising from a couple of villages a little way off and could hear the thump-thump of women pounding rice. Along the beach a herd of cows mooched towards us, complete with oxpeckers on their back. You often see cows on the beach; apparently they like to lick salt from the rocks. Either that or they go waterskiing when no-one is looking.
Towards the end of the morning the familiar buildings of Sanyang came into view in the distant haze. This is a place I have stayed a number of times in beach lodges, with friends who have visited me. Sanyang is a lovely beach, and the Rainbow Beach Bar has a relaxed atmosphere, good food, and pleasant simple rooms. We took the decision to halt at Sanyang rather than attempt to get to Tanji, which possibly a little too far away for the time we had remaining, and in the scorching afternoon heat. So we enjoyed lunch, slept a little and swam in the ocean, before returning home by geli.
